whiteout. a surprise halloween snowstorm cripples the east. >> leaving thousands in the dark. >> here's what people are talking about tonight. it's the sound being heard up and down the east coast, including here in maryland. after a surprise, record- breaking snowfall cuts power and destroys homes. the wjz first warning weather team continues to track this record breaker. meteorologist bernadette woods has more on how the storm formed. but first, mike hellgren spent the day in western maryland. and the problems people out there are still facing. >> reporter: for many here, the snow was an unbelievable sight. and some are still without power. >> reporter: when that rare october snowstorm blew into maryland, it hit hard into the western part of the state, where it still coats the hills in frostburg. at the height of the storm, more than 25,000 people in western maryland were without

power. and roads were treacherous. >> this is very early. broke a lot of trees, did a lot of damage, you know? >> i've never seen it this early. and i'm 82 years old. made it look like christmas eve. would have been a pretty christmas eve. [ laughter ] [ saws buzzing ] >> reporter: from maine to maryland, the snowfall stunned many across the northeast, where wrecks littered roads and stranded planes and train passengers; and left millions in the dark and cold. >> reporter: even though it was early, the state highway administration says it was prepared for a significant snowfall. >> half of being ready is being prepared. we had four that were shut down for a period of time. >> reporter: many are taking mother nature's latest hit in stride. >> here we go. a little early this year. but here we go for the season.

i wasn't ready. you're never ready. add this haunting fact. the official start of winter is still more than 50 days away. >> the snow is melting fast. in frostburg, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> get out of there, mike. thank you very much. first warning weather continues with meteorologist bernadette woods. and more on the path of how much snow some saw. >> reporter: it was definitely a record breaker up and down the east coast. notice all of the bright colors. those were the most intense bands coming down where we saw the snow accumulating east and west. southeast it was pretty much all rain. then during the evening hours, i, everything winding down. when that pulled away, this is what we were left with. for most of us, you see nothing or only rain south and east of the city. numbers jump really quickly. where mike was, in some cases,

close to a foot of snow. now, when you take that band, head it up into new england, some people saw over a foot of snow. so definitely a big storm any time of year, especially this early. we'll have your forecast here coming up shortly. back to you inside. stay with wjz for first warning weather coverage. for updates any time, go to wjz.com. a total loss. fire completely stroyed a historic mount washington landmark. adam may has emotional reaction from the tavern owner and the latest on plans to rebuild. >> reporter: just hours after locking up sunday night, fire alarms went off inside the mount washington tavern. >> was anything left intact in the back? >> it's hard to say. we haven't been able to enter the building yet. >> reporter: the owner says most of the building appears totaled. >> we're worried about our employees. they're like family to us. we have several that have been

with us 20, 25 years. and we're concerned about our clientele. they're like family to us. >> reporter: some of those customers flock to the scene. >> you always saw friends you knew. last year, my friends and i, we spent christmas there together our parents upon out of town. >> when we bought a house, we signed on it, my husband and i came here for dinner in between the signing. because it's an icon. >> we'll be back, better than ever. but it's going to take a while. >> the mount washington tavern is an anchor of the neighborhood. and its shutdown is going to affect a lot of smaller businesses here next door. >> there's no way. >> the owner of crepe du jour worries about the loss of foot traffic. >> we hope everybody comes. >> on top of the fire, a few other nearby businesses recently went under. but survivors remain

optimistic. >> we are a strong village. everybody sticks together. and hopefully as the mount washington tavern comes back and rebuilds, we'll be a wonderful village again. and the mount washington tavern was originally a general store, built in the an00s. getting close to an end. the bribery trial of a powerful state senator is winding down. >> well, vic, the currie case is expected to go to the jury this week. currie, is accused of selling his influence to help a local grocery store chain. his defense team rested this morning, without currie taking the stand in his own defense. throughout the trial, well- known politicians have taken the stand. closing arguments are set for wednesday morning in federal court. >> currie who maintains his innocence, could face jail time if convicted. right now, defense attorneys are trying to

convince a jury to spare the lives of walter bishop. should he die for killing a popular towson gas station owner. the trial has moved for publicity sake. derek valcourt has more on the experts. >> they had heard from psychologists as defense experts try to make the case for mercy. >> reporter: walter bishop fires the shot that killed hess gas station owner ray porter. promised $9,000 for the murder of the victim's wife, carla porter. there was no doubt in the jury's mind, they heard it from his own mouth in a recorded confession. >> as i came around the corner, he turned his head. and i went like this. >> reporter: his conviction last week now leads the jury to decide whether he should be put to death. it's a punishment he's eligible for under a new maryland law, that allows the death penalty in cases where there's a videotaped confession. monday, they called prison

expert dr. robert johnson, to testify about a sentence of life in prison without parole. >> reporter: life in prison are both death sentences. i call life without parole death by incarceration. you're sentencing a person to die in prison. one case in the lethal injection chamber. in the other case, pie either natural -- by either natural causes or violence. >> several others were also called saying it resulted in a border line personality disorder, depression, and addiction to drugs and alcohol. >> and defense attorneys will continue to try to pull at jurors' heartstrings. they will point out that bishop had five young children and that he has family members who still love him. the sentencing phase of this trial resumes tomorrow morning. >> thank you very much, derek. prosecutors will also seek the death penalty for the victim's wife, and the plot mastermind,

carla porter, with her trial begins in the spring. three workers became stuck outside of a high-rise building after a scaffolding collapse. they were hanging between the 8th and 9th floors in the building. the workers are expected to be okay. a trick and then a treat. ranks fans are still trying to recover from a wild win over the arizona cardinals. sports director mark viviano has more on the team. and what the fan is saying about the biggest comeback in halloween history. >> posts go boo. and so -- ghosts go boo, and so do fans. but the ravens turned the bad plays into good and boos into cheers as they rallied to avoid what would have been a second straight embarrassing loss. >> reporter: we thought the ravens got their wake-up call last monday in jacksonville. well, they apparently hit

minutes, it will be pretty dark out there. radar, nothing bad out here. there are light showers across far western maryland. these are not going to affect the baltimore region that much. more importantly, there is rain across southern virginia. that is primarily moving off to the northeast. it may just brush southern maryland and lower eastern shore late tonight. in fact, that's a pretty good batch of rain as you can see. temperature-wise, it's not that bad. 51. cool spot, as you might expect in oakland. if you're head being out in the next hour or two, upper 40s to around the 50-degree mark with rather cloudy conditions. >> thank you. of course, we know this night is one of the favorites for children and many adults. wjz is live in timonium. people around the area are celebrating halloween. hi, jessica. >> hello, vic. within the last hour, we managed to pick up a trick out here. trick-or-treating. and a whole bunch of other kidlets. we were talking earlier about

just how much people are shopping. these kids said their parents got something at target. consumers are expected to spend an average of $700 each this holiday season. >> 11th hour shoppers giving retailers a very sweet treat ahead of the holiday season. >> it's one of the best holidays of the year for us. sell a lot of merchandise this year. this is really hot this year. >> according to the national retail federation, americans plan to spend almost $7 billion this halloween. that's a "b" as in boo. $2.5 billion is expected to go towards costumes. 3.5 million on pet costumes. and $2 billion on pet candy. >> in a recession, i'm working so i'm good. i'm not in a recession. >> i'm going to be like sandra dee. so i already have the pants i

>> it's pretty exciting. how many people get to say they lived on a cruise ship? >> the floating ship is how the school decided to deal with a mold problem. >> our dorm flooded. jz . >> reporter: originally, students were put up in hotels. but they were too far from campus. so an alumni talked about an empty cruise ship coming through the area. >> it sounded possible. and the more we found out, the more possible it seemed. >> this is docked in the st. mary's river, right next to campus. >> i think they've done an amazing job putting it altogether in such a short amount of time. >> sounds like they'll have more amenities on the ship than they did in the dorm. like housekeeping services. >> reporter: but school leaders announced there was a problem with getting the ship to dock. and that meant their move-in date was getting pushed back another 24 hours.

>> i'm ready to be settled somewhere. i want to have a home. >> allison and the other students will have to head back to the hotel, until their adventure on the voyager can begin. >> reporter: school leaders now hope to have the students board monday night. reporting live, monique griego. the relocation is expected to cost st. mary's, around $1.5 million. they hope to have the mold cleaned up by the start of next semester. roads, bridges and tunnels will get better than expected tomorrow. that's because the toll increases will be better than expected. it will now be $4 to cross the bay bridge. state officials say the price hike is needed to pay for repairs to the aging infrastructure. the two ceos, working to merge constellation and exelon energy spend their day trying to convince regulators, it's a good deal for bge customers. alex demetrick reports, the

company is offering a quarter billion dollars to show their good intentions. >> reporter: mayo shaduck is the owner for constellation energy which owns bge. chris conner is a shock-based company. maryland's public service commission brought them together to answer a very basic question. >> how will bge be treated in a post-merge. >> consumer groups are watching closely. and some are outright opposed to this. >> when you're selling off or selling out, a fortune 500 company, like constellation, you better be careful. and i don't think it's a good deal for maryland. >> reporter: a merger would benefit exelon and challenges state regulators. >> the companies are offering $250 million in benefits to cover $110 million in credits, which works out to a $100 credit per bge customer.

it is 6:29. 59 degrees in baltimore -- baltimore and partly cloudy. dead lie snowstorm, from maryland to maine, millions of cleaning up after a powerful nor'easter. our coverage begins with randall pinkston in hard-hit new jersey. >> crews are hard at work in northern new jersey, using chain saws to clear trees that have fallen on homes, on yards and on power lines. more than 2 million people from maryland to maine are still without power, two days after the unusual fall snowstorm. >> the way things look, it's going to be probably a couple of weeks before we're caught up to all of this stuff. there's trees down everywhere. >> reporter: there were some close calls. >> all of a sudden, there was a noise and the house shook. >> reporter: it shook from these two trees that fell on the eces' home. a branch pierced through their

upper floor office. >> must have been pretty scary, huh? >> it went like this. >> reporter: it caused more damage than hurricane irene. this brand-new home will require major repairs after a 100-foot tree fell on top of it. >> we have trees downed all across the northern part of the state that have taken wires down. both supply wires, transmission lines, and lines directly to homes. >> reporter: it's the same situation in parts of massachusetts and connecticut, where crews are trying to repair sagging or severed power lines. >> it looks kind of like what i would think a war zone would like like. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of residents on the east coast may not get their power back until the end of week. in upper saddle, new jersey, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> the roads are so dangerous in parts of massachusetts and connecticut. officials in some towns have delayed halloween, until later this week. the weekend snowstorm cause the major problems in airports up and down the east coast. mary is live in the newsroom

with one group of passengers, stuck on the plane for eight hours. >> unbelievable. the jet blue flight was one of several diverted to harford saturday night. they sat on the tarmac until the snow came down. the passengers say there was no food or water and the bathrooms eventually became unusable. the situation got so bad, the pilot put out his own call for help. >> you know, we can't seem to get any help from our own company. i apologize for this. but is there any way you can get a tug and a tow bar out here and get us towed somewhere to a gate or something? i don't care. take us anywhere. >> jet blue has apologized and said six planes and 700 passengers were affected. they say power outages at the terminal in harford added to the problem. vic? >> mary, thank you. the department is investigating the incident. jet blue faces possibilities of huge fines under the recently passed passenger bill of

rights. a recent murder that may have been prevented. two witnesses testified in the britney norwood murder trial, they heard disturbing sounds from inside the lulu lemon store the night jayna murray was murdered. norwood's attorney admits his client killed murray, but said it was not premeditated. this is video of anna capman, trying on hats and buying leggings. a few months later, cameras catch her with red hair and big sunglasses in a new york coffee shop, meaning someone she thinks is a russian handler. chapman is one of 10 russians arrested last june and deported. >> on the defense, republican presidential candidate, herman herman cain is being forced to

address claims that he sexually harassed two women. >> reporter: republican front runner herman cain denied allegations he engaged in improper behavior with two former female employees. >> in all of my 40 years of experience, running businesses and corporations, i have never sexually harassed anyone. >> reporter: they said the inappropriate conduct happened in the 1990s, when cain was the head of the international restaurant association. the candidate insists, an investigation turned noip evidence to support the two women's claims. >> i was faultily accused of sexual -- falsely accused of sexual harassment. >> they tried to promote his 999 tax plan. >> yes, it's a bold idea and yes it's a bold plan. but america can't wait. >> reporter: cain is coming

sweeteners. >> i think the companies really are misleading both the parents and their children. that they have these products, which are essentially water and sugar and artificial sweeteners in many of them. and they're trying to package them to look like they're juice. >> reporter: the report also found that companies specifically target young kids in advertisements to sell their products. >> wow. >> we've definitely been food shopping. and, you know, going down an aisle. and she'll say, elmo. or i want the juice with the bears on it. or i want the juice with big bird. >> reporter: in a statement, the american beverage association called the report another attack by known critics in an ongoing attempt to single out one product as the cause of obesity, adding that soft drink advertising has dropped by 96% since 2004, during children's programming. >> right now, the beverage industry is still self- regulated. still to come on wjz eyewitness news.

suicide bombing leaves five people dead. police slammed a truck filled with explosives into a checkpoint. three others rushed into a compound, sparking a lengthy gunfight, sparking security forces. the taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. rescue crews pulled the last remaining victims from a

grain elevator in northeast kansas. six people died when a huge explosion rock the the facility. damage from the blast delayed the search for the other victims. no cause has been given. but highly combustible green dust has been controversial. prosecutors are slamming michael jackson's doctor in the manslaughter trial. >> reporter: a key defense witness is admitting dr. conrad murray made mistakes on the day michael jackson died. >> i think he should have called 911 sooner. i do not, however, think it would have made any difference in the outcome of this case. >> reporter: prosecutors grilled dr. paul white about the care dr. murray gave his superstar patient. >> have you ever administered propofol in someone's bedroom? >> no, i have not. >> have you ever heard of anyone doing that prior to this case? >> no, i have not. >> would you walk out of the room and leave them alone with no personnel and no monitoring if you're of the opinion they

like to push propofol themselves, would you walk out of the room in that situation, yes or no? ? y no, i -- >> no. i would not leave the room. >> thank you. >> reporter: jackson's doctor is accused of an overdose to jackson. dr. white believes jackson injected himself with the fatal dose. but the prosecution has its own propofol expert who had said the defense's theory that jackson could have given himself the drug is, quote, a crazy scenario. >> reporter: dr. schaefer testified that jackson would have been too groggy to give himself more. prosecutors claim jackson gave himself more. and that his recklessness and negligence directly led to jackson's detect. murray is charged with involuntary manslaughter. jurors will likely begin their deliberations later this week. in los angeles, karen brown,

you know that. it's a roller coaster with excitement, the emostly cloudy skieses, the ups and downs. looks good on the surface. but as with most other teams, there is plenty of room for improvement. and coach john harbaugh met to discuss the win. coming off an embarrassing loss at jacksonville. offense sputtered, gave the ball twice to the cardinals. and arizona, a 13-point underdog. enjoyed a 21-point lead in front of a stunned crowd in baltimore. yeah, the fans were angry. they booed their home team. but the purple birds finally got their act together. and they put to rest the thought of a second straight upset. today, harbaugh assessed his team's overall play after that close call. >> comes down to playing good, solid football. you know? and it's technique. it's attention to detail. it's getting a little momentum.

that sure helps you on offense when you can get the change moving. i think it's understanding the things we do well. and then doing them well. in the end, these guys making plays. these guys come up and start making plays. it seems to have a little momentum building effect. >> now, harbaugh declined comment on two controversial calls against ravens' players for taunting, the most questionable for running back ray rice with the game tied in the fourth quarter. safety bernard pollard was also assessed a taunting penalty. harbaugh says he's going to assess this with the league. mike tomlin steelers coming off a big win at home over the patriots yesterday. steelers lost big. but have won 5 of 6 since. and are ahead of the ravens in first place, as they get ready for another head to head to show down. in baseball news, the orioles could be close to naming tony lakava as their new

general manager. the assistant gm was back in toronto today. he is one of four candidates to replace andy macphail. but kava is the first to get a second meeting. looking for a second manager. after tony larussa announced his retirement today he is the first to walk away after leaving a world series. nearly half of the time spent with the cardinals. he won three world series. two with st. louis. one with oakland. and at age 67, he is done doing it. >> went to the season. and i felt that this is -- i think this just feels like it's time to end it and i think it's going to be great for the cardinals to refresh what's going on here. >> he won more than 2700 games as manager. third most in history. larussa said he would not
